Year-Round Swimming for Northern Climate Outdoor Pool
While summer in the Rockies is beautiful, it is by no means lengthy, which is why the client asked Uni-Systems to extend their swimming season. For the project, Uni-Systems worked with OpenAire, a well-known retractable pool enclosure firm, to create exactly what the owners were looking for – a heated swimming enclosure that family and friends can enjoy year-round.

The pool enclosure consists of two fixed end sections, built by OpenAire, and a single operable roof panel, designed by Uni-Systems, that spans between the two end sections.  The total area enclosed by the retractable roof panel is approximately 107 feet by 44 feet. The operable panel consists of a wheeled frame that rides flush mounted on steel rails that run the length of the pool. When in the open position, the operable panel stacks out of the way, over the new mechanical/storage building. The rails are completely level, and the tops of the rails are flush with the pool deck.
A point of interest is the “hidden” track, known as a kerf. The kerf is filled with a hollow, light grey foam, that provides a flush surface for foot traffic over the rails but can be compressed as the panel wheels pass over a specific area.  The rail foundation surface is also sloped to drain water away from the enclosure.

The glass-clad pool enclosure protects a swimming pool and wave pool in inclimate weather, and opens to provide an outdoor pool area when the weather is favorable. The enclosure is made of three sections, including a fixed section at each end of the pool area, and a single operable panel that spans between them. The operable panel is 44 feet long, spans 107 feet across the pool area and moves 42 feet between the open and closed positions.

The traction drive system moves the panel six feet per minute, to fully open or close in approximately seven minutes. Each corner of the operable panel rides on a 24-inch traction wheel powered by a one-horsepower electric motor. This drive wheelbox is from the Uni-Systems Modular Mechanization Component (MMC) product line.

The panel is operated from a local control system located in the nearby mechanical storage building. The operator must press and release the [OPEN] or [CLOSE] pushbutton every 30 seconds throughout operation to ensure constant attention to panel movement. The control system automatically monitors and adjusts panel movement to maintain correct position, speed and alignment throughout operation. Built-in safety features include audio and visual alarms that are active throughout operation.
